On Painting
My painting does not begin with an idea, but with an openness. I work without a predetermined visual goal and allow forms, rhythms and tensions to emerge only as the painting progresses. The picture develops its own logic. I follow it without seeking to control it.
Each layer alters the one before it. Colour is applied, removed, covered over or revealed once more. Visible traces are not remnants of the working process, but part of the painting itself. I am not interested in the perfection of a surface, but in its history.
Over the years, my colour palette has become more subdued. This reduction does not signify a sacrifice, but a condensation. For me, tension arises not from diversity, but from the relationship between material, gesture, structure and space.
I do not see painting as an illustration of an idea. Pictures do not have to prove anything or convey any messages. They are allowed to leave questions open, to tolerate contradictions and to elude unambiguous interpretation. Meaning arises neither solely within the picture nor solely in the viewer’s gaze. It arises in the space between them.
I do not paint what I know. I paint until I recognise something.

Zur Malerei
Meine Malerei beginnt nicht mit einer Idee, sondern mit einer Offenheit. Ich arbeite ohne festgelegtes Bildziel und lasse zu, dass sich Formen, Rhythmen und Spannungen erst im Verlauf des Malens zeigen. Das Bild entwickelt seine eigene Logik. Ich folge ihr, ohne sie kontrollieren zu wollen.
Jede Schicht verändert die vorhergehende. Farbe wird aufgetragen, entfernt, überdeckt oder wieder freigelegt. Sichtbare Spuren sind keine Überreste des Arbeitsprozesses, sondern Teil des Bildes. Mich interessiert nicht die Perfektion einer Oberfläche, sondern ihre Geschichte.
Mit den Jahren ist meine Farbpalette ruhiger geworden. Diese Reduktion bedeutet keinen Verzicht, sondern eine Verdichtung. Spannung entsteht für mich nicht aus Vielfalt, sondern aus dem Verhältnis von Material, Geste, Struktur und Raum.
Ich verstehe Malerei nicht als Illustration eines Gedankens. Bilder müssen nichts beweisen und keine Botschaften transportieren. Sie dürfen Fragen offenlassen, Widersprüche aushalten und sich einer eindeutigen Lesbarkeit entziehen. Bedeutung entsteht weder allein im Bild noch allein im Blick des Betrachters. Sie entsteht im Raum dazwischen.
Ich male nicht, was ich kenne. Ich male, bis ich etwas erkenne.

À propos de la peinture
Ma peinture ne part pas d’une idée, mais d’une ouverture d’esprit. Je travaille sans objectif visuel prédéfini et laisse les formes, les rythmes et les tensions émerger au fur et à mesure du processus de création. L’œuvre développe sa propre logique. Je la suis sans chercher à la contrôler.
Chaque couche modifie la précédente. La peinture est appliquée, retirée, recouverte ou remise à nu. Les traces visibles ne sont pas des vestiges du processus de travail, mais font partie intégrante du tableau lui-même. Ce n’est pas la perfection d’une surface qui m’intéresse, mais son histoire.
Au fil des années, ma palette de couleurs est devenue plus sobre. Pour moi, cette réduction n’est pas un renoncement, mais une condensation. La tension ne naît pas, selon moi, de la diversité, mais de l’interaction entre la matière, le geste, la structure et l’espace.
Je ne considère pas la peinture comme l’illustration d’une idée. Les tableaux n’ont pas à prouver quoi que ce soit ni à transmettre de messages. Ils peuvent laisser des questions en suspens, admettre des contradictions et échapper à une interprétation univoque. Le sens ne naît ni exclusivement dans l’image, ni exclusivement dans le regard du spectateur. Il naît dans l’espace entre les deux.
Je ne peins pas ce que je sais. Je peins jusqu’à ce que je reconnaisse quelque chose.
